approaching humans

A recent sales related phone call made me realise how little knowledge humans have in dealing with other humans. To me this is of dire consequences to any persons wishing to conduct meaningful and purposeful conversations with others. We have spent every moment of our lives watching our and others behavior and interaction with others, you would think we would all be experts by now. Why have we as the human race de-evolved our communication skills over time? Where will this lead our species of skilled monkeys? Below is my top 5 guidelines i try to stick to when dealing with people.

  1. Every person desires a level of importance equal to or above the level they have given you.
  2. Body language, eye contact and vocal tone are more important than the words you are saying.
  3. People are far too interested in themselves to be overly concerned with you, if you can reverse this in yourself, you will be worth your weight in gold.
  4. Most people rush out words that don’t truly reflect their thoughts, accept this, take words at face value and always allow someone the chance to expand on or correct their words.
  5. Listening begins with the eyes and body, then the ears, brain and finally your mouth.
